START

Overview

The Sobriety Treatment and Recovery Team (START) is a child welfare program for families with co-occurring substance use and child maltreatment. The START team includes a therapist who provides assessments and ongoing service coordination, in addition to Family Mentors who are certified peers with lived experience in recovery and with DSS. This team works in conjunction with the DSS Child Welfare team to engage families at risk in the program to promote engagement into recovery in an effort to prevent out-of-home placement and/or reduce time youth are placed out of home. START provides rapid assessment and linkage to treatment within a few days of the child welfare case opening. The goals of START include:

  1. Support a parent’s journey into recovery
  2. Minimize or eliminate separation of parent and child when possible
  3. Foster positive attachments between children and parents while parents are supported with wrap around services
