START
Overview
The Sobriety Treatment and Recovery Team (START) is a child welfare program for families with co-occurring substance use and child maltreatment. The START team includes a therapist who provides assessments and ongoing service coordination, in addition to Family Mentors who are certified peers with lived experience in recovery and with DSS. This team works in conjunction with the DSS Child Welfare team to engage families at risk in the program to promote engagement into recovery in an effort to prevent out-of-home placement and/or reduce time youth are placed out of home. START provides rapid assessment and linkage to treatment within a few days of the child welfare case opening. The goals of START include:
- Support a parent’s journey into recovery
- Minimize or eliminate separation of parent and child when possible
- Foster positive attachments between children and parents while parents are supported with wrap around services

Patient Testimonials
Thank you for existing. You helped me make a hard transformation during a very stressful period of my life. I don’t know where I would be without this service program. It made me feel welcome, safe, and secure.

Dr. John Carter has been seeing my boys since small children. I love how he includes the parent in last half of sessions, and explains everything as clearly as he can, and stays on top of medication, and side effects.

I contacted family preservation services at an extremely difficult time for my family and I. They have been amazing, from the variety of therapists and flexible hours. Just the overall care and concern has been just what we have needed. The search for therapists is very difficult but I'm so blessed we have found them.

My brother has been a patient here for years now and they have been there for my family in more ways than not. They are great here at this clinic and my family and I are very grateful to the entire staff!
